Winter/Spring

Forsythia buds indoors*

"If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome." ---Charlotte Bronte

*For more on how to force branches indoors for early spring blossoms, see this post.

Many thanks to Judi Gerber for bringing this lovely quote to my attention.

Naomi, I hadn't seen that quote either; thanks for spreading it around. Also, thanks for repeating the branch-forcing info; I vaguely skimmed over it before but really need to study it as I have not forced branches successfully before. Living plants inside really get us in touch with the plant-energy around us, and it's my conviction human beings are wired to need that.

That is such a lovely thought for this time of year, one which is brought home as we watch our gardens wake from winter.
